Northern Ireland to stay with UK or leave for United Ireland ?

Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has called for a border poll on a united Ireland, after the UK has voted to leave the EU.

Support for the EU is considerably higher in Northern Ireland than the rest of the UK.

As the region shares a land border with the Republic of Ireland, it is unknown how the relationship between the two countries will be affected by Brexit.

UK voted to leave: What happens now?

Britain has voted to leave the European Union, with the Leave campaign securing around 51.8 per cent of the vote.

The UK has been a member of the European Union (and its precursors) since 1973, and the British government now faces the gargantuan task of unraveling decades of legislation, treaties and deals between the UK and the EU, the single biggest market in the world.

The EU referendum vote itself is not a legal notification. The formal announcement to the EU is expected to happen at a meeting of the European Council (the EU’s heads of government) on Monday, June 27.

Once that happens, it will trigger Article 50 of the 1973 Treaty of Rome, which gives both sides two years to reach an agreement.

However, because the UK is so intricately entwined with the EU, (More …)

Common pension scheme for Sri Lanka

All elderly in Sri Lanka should have access to at least one reliable, affordable and adequate pension, economists said. “An adequate pension is essential to ensure income security for elderly, without being dependent,” Nisha Arunatilake of Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka said. She was speaking at the National Pensioners Day Symposium themed “Towards a National Pension Framework.”

Highlighting the problems within the pension system she said 87 percent of the population between the ages of 15 and 59 are not covered by a pension scheme, and only 30 percent of the population above the age of 60 get a meaningful pension. The system in the island should be (More …)

      Comment from Dr Lahiru Senanayake:

Concessionary vehicle permits were given to executive grade officers in the government sector as the government can’t give them a vehicle with driver and fuel to which they are entitled.

Government salary compression ratio is 1:4 which means the lowest salary is 11700 (that is to an unskilled laborer who joins today ) and maximum is four times of it = 46800 (that is to the Secretary of the ministry ) so for example a surgeon who retire next month will get a basic salary less than 46800. MRCS qualified surgeons get over 3 million basic salary in UK, Australia, Singapore new Zealand and most EU countries .

You know my basic salary is 26160 and that is what i get if i retire without anymore qualifications and that is what considered for bank loans.

Permit was given to keep the doctor and other qualified professionals in the country as an insensitive . They are entitled to permit after five years of service where as MPs and provincial counselors get it the day they enter parliament or council. They get 100% Concession where as others get 40% tax concession not 100%. So all MPs have taken their permit vehicles by now.

If they gave me a vehicle driver and fuel it could have cost around one lak a month. So for five years its 6 millions instead they give the permit so i can buy a vehicle worth 25000$ cif with 40% tax concession . If i buy a vehicle worth maximum that is 25000$= 3.6 million rupees CIF. Tax is around 300% so its 10.8 million rupees and the 40% concession reduces 4.32 million rupees and i can buy the vehicle for 3.6+6.48 =10.08 million rupees. So government gives me 4.32 concession and avoid paying 6 millions that was the logic. So what i think is government must give employees what they are entitled not permits

        Hello,

First of all, it’s “incentive”, not INSENSITIVE. Please feel free to migrate to a different country if you feel your efforts are unappreciated here. The money that finances your permits doesn’t grow on trees. They are funded by the tax payers of this country. Do you know what else was funded by the tax payers of this country? YOUR MEDICAL EDUCATION. Did you know that doctors in the UK, Australia and all the other countries you mentioned paid for their medical education? They didn’t get it for free like you did. Your salary is quite significant compared to what is considered the average wage rate in Sri Lanka. Please stop trying to milk the tax payers dry. We would be happy to see you and your ego pack your bags and leave to greener pastures where you will be handsomely paid. Please don’t forget to reimburse us (the tax payers) for your education before you leave.

        Thanks!

ISIS and US backed Syrian moderates

Nobody seemed to know a couple of weeks ago where US-backed Syrian ‘moderate rebels’ were, but now that Russia launched its anti-terror op in Syria, they are ‘everywhere’, while ISIS, on the contrary, is ‘nowhere’, says political analyst Neil Clark.

Q: Russian President Vladimir Putin said he received a proposal from the French president to form a coalition between Assad and the Free Syrian Army. It seems like an unexpected proposal. The Russian line is: who are these moderates? Could they form some sort of synergy against ISIL (The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) ?

The Government of Sri Lanka awarded the Field Marshal title to former Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka for the yeoman service rendered by him, achieving the victory over terrorism. The official awarding of this honorary title to General Sarath Fonseka by President Maithripala Sirisena was taken place at the Ministry of Defence.

The language controversy over Sri Lanka National Anthem

Related Article: Sri Lankan Timeline in Photos

A National Anthem is a song of patriotic sentiment affirming loyalty to one’s country or nation adopted officially by that Country or Nation. An anthem becomes a national anthem through Constitutional provision, specific legislation or long – standing tradition.

Stylistically the majority of anthems are marches or hymns. They are usually written or composed in the most common language in the Country. There are however some notable exceptions to this rule particularly in multi-ethnic nations.

In Sri Lanka then known as Ceylon , the song “Namo Namo Matha” written by the artist-poet Ananda Samarakoon was formally adopted as the national anthem in 1951. It was slightly amended and changed to “Sri Lanka Matha” in 1961 without the consent of Samarakoon.

This is a very interesting item.

Being a non-Sri Lankan, I never realised your National Anthem was in a supposedly different language.

Of course it should be universally sung in Sinhala.(that includes when played in other Countries.)

However, as your item pointed out, in the areas of mainly Tamil population it is most definitely correct for it to be sung in the Tamil language. Otherwise there is no way for your Nation to ever become united as one without accepting the fact you have two distinct races.

      Thank you both.

Wishing Tamils and Sinhalese the best of good fortune.
