Policeman killed during tense situation in Puttalam; Army takes over the control

A police constable was killed and five civilians injured during a tense situation in Puttalam town last night (Aug. 21). An unknown person had fired shots when the PC and the Grama Seva officer had gone to Mahalgunduwaarea to inquire into reports about a ‘grease devil.’

The injured, including a woman and a 13-year-old boy, have been admitted to Puttalam Base Hospital. Mobs also set fire to the motorcycle of the policeman.

The Army and the STF have taken control of the Puttlam Police station from last night. The Army has also taken control of the whole town after violent clashes erupted last night which resulted in the death of a 23 year old Police constable. All police officers in the area have been called in to the police station and are given heavy protection by the Army and the STF. No policemen have been stationed on duty around the area.

According to police, normalcy has now returned to Puttalam town.
