The tsunami victims were remembered at various religious and related events held in various parts of the country today. The main national ceremony was held in Jaffna while an islandwide two minute silence too was observed.
The train which was caught in the tsunami on the southern coastal line on the day of the tsunami claiming the lives of 1,700 passengers at Peraliya made a symbolic trip on Sunday to the location where it was hit by the tragedy.
Only the engine and two of its original compartments have been restored.
In Galle on the eve of the tsunami anniversary residents were seen lighting lanterns to mark the event. Over 40,000 people died due to the tsunami that affected almost all coastal areas in Sri Lanka in 2004.
