UN Secretary-General Ban ki-moon has decided to close down the UNDP Regional Centre in Colombo and is recalling the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Neil Buhne, to New York for consultations because of anti-UN protests led by minister Wimal Weerawansa.
U.N. associate spokesman Farhan Haq said Thursday that Ban found it “unacceptable” that Sri Lankan authorities failed to prevent the office from being disrupted by “unruly protests organized and led by a cabinet minister.”
The Secretary-General calls upon the Government of Sri Lanka to live up to its responsibilities towards the United Nations as host country, so as to ensure continuation of the vital work of the Organization to assist the people of Sri Lanka without any further hindrance.
National Freedom Front leader and cabinet minister Wimal Weerawansa last morning (July 08) launched a fast-unto-death, demanding the UN chief disbanded an expert panel he has appointed on Sri Lanka.
This evening, he was examined by a specialist doctor who has warned that his health would be affected if he continued to refuse water for the next 24 hours.
