The government has decided to import 3,000 metric tonnes of chicken from Brazil to offset the prevailing short supply in the local market, Trade Minister Johnston Fernando says.
According to him, the imported chicken would be distributed through Sathosa outlets. This measure will maintain a stable price of Rs. 350 for a kilo of chicken, he says.
Though the average local consumption is over 12,000 metric tonnes, only 8,100 metric tonnes of chicken are produced locally, the minister says.
A kilo was sold between Rs. 550 and Rs. 600 last April, he adds.
