Airtel has exceeded one million customers in 171 days of operations. The firm signed up 100,000 customers in four days, 500,000 customers in 30 days and now had a million “revenue earning customers” as per their officials. they had so far invested 120 million US dollars in the country and was planning to put in 250 million US dollars.
Airtel has already started to roll out its network in the east of the island and would soon start building in the north. A 30-year war with Tamil Tiger separatists ended in May and authorities have encouraged telecom operators to move to the area. Telecom operators who already had networks in the area faced restriction during the war.
LirneAsia, a policy research body said multiple mobile phone ownership was growing in Sri Lanka.
According to official data by the end of the first quarter of 2009, there were 11.49 million mobiles phones in Sri Lanka, which grew 2.6 million over a year earlier.
