Students sitting for the GCE Advanced Level examinations would be able to use private buses free of charge by showing their admission card from August 8 – September 3, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said today.
However, The Private bus owners today said they will not be providing private bus transportation free of charge to A/L students sitting for their examinations although the Education Ministry had made a formal announcement to that effect.
The Private Bus Owners Association (PBOA) said yesterday that such a decision was not discussed with private bus owners and without making prior arrangements with the private bus operators.
“The ministry should not make such vague statements without discussing it with us beforehand. By doing this they will only distress and inconvenience the students and could potentially damage their education by doing this,” PBOA President, Gemunu Wijeyratne said.
He said last year a similar announcement was made to provide free transportation within the Western Province for students. He said it was an inconvenience to the students at the time.

In an extraordinary address at the MCC Spirit of Cricket Lecture at Lord’s, Kumar Sangakkara has launched a scathing attack on the “partisan cronies” at Sri Lanka Cricket who blight the sport in his country, and who led him to resign the captaincy after only two years in charge, in the wake of the World Cup final in April.
In an hour-long speech that earned him a standing ovation, Sangakkara charted the unique history of cricket in his country, and called on Sri Lanka Cricket to root out its corrupt practices, and recognise the huge role that the sport now needs to play in promoting reconciliation at the end of a 30-year civil war.
Sangakkara pinpointed the country’s most powerful moment of national unity – the World Cup final victory over Australia in 1996 – as the moment that the sport’s administration changed “from a volunteer-led organisation run by well-meaning men of integrity into a multimillion-dollar organisation that has been in turmoil ever since.”
With cricket administration on the verge of a collapse and the lure of the IPL money taking precedence over country, three senior players are planning to opt out from their national contracts, newspaper reliably learns.
Handled by the same agent, the three key players, a bowler who retired from Test recently, and two top order batsmen will not renew their contracts on return to the island after the conclusion of the English tour.
This will give them an option to pick and choose matches as they wish, giving more headache to the selectors.
