An elephant being transported by the Wildlife Department died of suffocation in the Galgamuwa area. The elephant, a tusker was being taken in a lorry when its leg broke through the bottom of the lorry and the elephant had struggled. Later attempts were made to release the elephant midway, but the attempt failed and the elephant had died.

Silver for Chinthana Vidanage
Chinthana Vidanage of Sri Lanka won the Silver Medal in 69kg weightlifting event at the Delhi Commonwealth games. The only other medal, a bronze, Sri Lanka has won so far too, came in weightlifting. On the previous day, Sudesh Peiris won the medal in the 62 kg category.

Bronze for Sudesh Peiris
Anton Sudesh Peiris Kurukulasooriyage won the bronze medal from the men’s 62 kg weightlifting clean and jerk event during the Commonwealth Games at the Jawaharlal Nehru sports complex in New Delhi on October 5, 2010.
Sudesh lifted a total weight of 272kg breaking the current Sri Lankan record for the category.

Lakshman Getting Rewards
UNP parliamentarian Lakshman Seneviratne who defected to the government yesterday traveled to his constituency, Mahiyangana, today (9) to meet with his supporters. Interestingly, on his first visit to Mahiyangana after the cross over, Seneviratne took a helicopter ride. he said he would be “flying” back to Colombo by afternoon.
